Oliver was 6lbs, 18.25 inches and Abigail was 6.2lbs, 18.25 inches. Both were born healthy, although Oliver ended up spending a night in the NICU. He was born with Cutis Aplasia on his head. Cutis Aplasia is simply explained as an absense of skin. Both spots are on his head and the only fall back of it might be that once it is healed, hair won't grow on the scar. Small price to pay for a healthy baby. His blood pressure was also a little low, as well as his blood sugar. I was a little out of it during delivery, but apparantly they had trouble getting Oliver to breath on his own. After a little more than 24 hours in the NICU, Oliver was brought to our room with a clean bill of health, except for the minor jaundice. Once he was in the room, a pediatric dermatologist came by to check on the Aplasia as a second opinion to the neonatologist and to make sure there was no further damage and that his skull was fully formed. So even after he was brought back to us, they still had to come take him for testing. It was stressful and heartbreaking that the poor guy had to go through so much in just the first couple days of life...but he is now as healthy as can be and he was such a trooper! All the nurses in the NICU and in recovery commented on how laid back he was....poor guy was probably just exhausted from all the commotion!
They are now almost a month old! I can't believe how much they have grown in just 3 weeks! When they were born, Oliver seemed so much more delicate than Abby...but he as passed her up in weight! They are the same length, but boy does he look much bigger now! In the hospital, Abby was putting Oliver to shame in the eating category...now the tables have turned!
I finally understand what people meant when they would say that they could just sit and stare at their baby all day...that is exactly what I often find myself doing! Having twins has been a handful and quite overwhelming at times, and after a certain age, I hear it gets easier... I'm counting on it! Sleep has become a luxury...except I have been lucky enough to have my mom come over every weekday in the morning so I can catch some more shut eye and recover from my c-section, and then she stays all day to help me with the babies and around the house. Poor Joe has to get up for work...so I try my best to get up with them at night and let him sleep, but unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. But I have to say, Joe has been an AMAZING daddy! I couldn't have asked for a better dad. He did everything in the hospital as far as changing diapers and feeding them or bringing them to me to feed when I could finally muster the strenght to hold them. He still does so much to help me, I'm so lucky and so are Oliver and Abigail!
I look forward to what the future holds for our new family of four!! It will definitely be a roller coaster, but I have always loved roller coasters...so it should be interesting and hopefully a lot of fun too!
